Lawmakers Hope To Reverse The Native American Mascot Ban

Two emergency bills were heard by the Senate yesterday in an effort to reverse the ban on Native American school mascots.

Senate Bill 215 and House bill 3397 are virtually the same.

They would change the law so that the Oregon Board of Education can not impose rules about mascots. Instead, they would allow a district to maintain a Native American mascot if district officials reached an agreement with local tribal leaders.

The House Education committee will hold a public hearing next week.
