New earthquake warning software launched

A new earthquake warning system for the Pacific Northwest launched today, February 17th.

Computers in offices across the region now have access to software that sends out an alarm seconds to minutes before the shaking begins.

The data the program uses comes from 240 seismometers placed throughout Oregon and Washington, along with instruments that give off readings in British Columbia and northern California.

That information goes to the University of Washington to be processed before the software sends an alert.
