Medford, Ore. — The Medford School District says they’re cancelling school Friday and Monday to get substitute teachers up to speed.
So, there’s frustration and confusion among parents.
One of those parents is Aaron Friar. He is the father of a 2nd and 6th grader.
Both are now at home, waiting to go back to school.
“I understand both parts of this. But who’s ultimately paying the price are the children,” Friar said.
Growing up with his own learning disability has shaped his views on why education is so important.
“I grew up dyslexic and if you don’t have a stedy routine you lose.”
That’s why he’s digging out old tests and other homework assignments and having his kids retake them.
“They’ve already had snow days off, now they have more days off, it’s less learning they are going to get.”
Some parents who couldn’t take off work Thursday, dropped their kids off at the YMCA.
Executive director Brad Russell says they about 30 children in enrolled by noon Thursday, fewer than they anticipated.
“We have a capacity of about 150 kids. We have a lot of people calling about Tomorrow and Monday,” Russell said.
He anticipates that each day school is canceled, more kids will be dropped off.
As for Friar, he’s hoping a compromise can be found and his daughters can get be back in their classrooms with their teachers.
“They’ve helped them out through so many things but they can’t help them out today or tomorrow or until this gets done,” Friar said.
