A predatory sex offender has been released from prison into a downtown Klamath Falls neighborhood…and probation officers were out today notifying his new neighbors.
While Johnny Ray Thomas has served his time in prison, corrections officials believe he still may pose a potential threat to the community.
Workers from community corrections have been going door to door to let people know that 40 year old Johnny Ray Thomas now lives in their neighborhood.
Klamath County Community Corrections Director Kiki Parker-Rose explains: “Based on our risk assessments and his criminal history, it designates him as a predatory sex offender.”
Parker-Rose notes that Thomas moved into the area January 4th after completing a six-year prison term…
“He has a history, a previous history of sex crimes, and most recently he went to prison for two counts of unlawful contact with a child.”
The notification packets include common questions and answers, and tips on how to explain the situation to children.
Parker-Rose adds that corrections officials are also taking additional steps…
“We have him on a GPS monitoring system, so we are tracking his movements. He’s excluded from going to parks, and schools, and those types of areas.”
Parker-Rosesays acommunity meeting will be held Thursday night to address concerns that residents may have…
“We’re going to have a community meeting at 5 o’clock at the Klamath County Government Center in the Commissioner’s hearing room.”
Johnny Thomas stands five foot five, weighs 145 pounds and has brown hair and hazel eyes.
State law requires felons to be returned to their county of conviction upon their release from prison.
As part of his release agreement, Thomas must submit to 6 years of post-prison supervision.
He’s not allowed to use alcohol or drugs, and is subject to a strict curfew.
