Seismic Retrofit Grant

Oregon’s largest seismic retrofit grant of 2011 is headed to Mills Elementary School in Klamath Falls.

Principal Mike Herron says the one and a half million dollar grant will help to beef up the school’s auditorium to help withstand an earthquake.

“This was an opportunity to utilize a seismic retrofit to make the building safer, a place that would be a rally point if we ever had some type of catastrophic event.”

Mills School will host an open house from 6:pm to 7:pm Thursday to show off the project. Herron notes they’ll also be kicking off a ‘seat sponsorship’ fundraiser.

“We’re asking people if they can help us with 25 dollars per seat, to help re-cover the seats.”

Herron says that construction will get underway in March.

“The goal would be that we are ready to have a celebration sometime in September, celebrating completion of the project.”

The 800 seat auditorium was built in the late 1940’s.
