Men’s world No. 1 Jannik Sinner announced that he will not be competing at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games on Wednesday due to tonsillitis.
“After a good week of clay training I started to feel unwell. I spent a couple of days resting and during a visit the doctor found tonsillitis and strongly advised me against playing,” Sinner posted on X.
Sinner reached the top spot of the rankings after a deep run at the French Open earlier this spring before he was dismissed by eventual men’s champion Carlos Alcaraz. The 22-year-old lost in the semifinals to eventual Roland-Garros champion Alcaraz in five sets. Sinner’s success in Paris comes after he captured his first Grand Slam title in Australia earlier this year.
Sinner was expected to play both the men’s singles event, and was expected to pair with Lorenzo Musetti in men’s doubles. Musetti enters the Games after a semifinal run at Wimbledon in July. The Italian said ciao to top American Taylor Fritz in a five-set quarterfinal, before falling to eventual runner up Djokovic in straight-sets in the semifinal.
