Boxing day at the Beekman house

12.26 BEEKMAN HOUSEJacksonville, Ore. — For some, the day after Christmas is also known as Boxing day and at the historical Beekman house in Jacksonville, Boxing day was a trip back in time.

In Victorian times ‘Boxing day’ served as a special holiday for servants of wealthy households after working through the Christmas holiday.

At the Beekman house that meant opening the doors to visitors to tour the historic gothic-style home as it would be during a 19th-century Christmas.

“Jacksonville was a melting pot. People came from all over the world, quite literally, to jacksonville and they brought their traditions and cultures with them, and all of these became melded together and that became how we now celebrate Christmas,” said Historic Jacksonville President Carolyn Kingsnorth.

In keeping with the Boxing day theme, the Beekman house is accepting food donations and giving a portion of it’s proceeds to Access of Jackson County.

You can check out the Beekman house tomorrow from 11am to 6pm.
