Dallas, Tex. (NBC News) — A senior law enforcement official has identified the gunman killed an ambush style shooting targeting Dallas police officers Thursday as 25-year-old Micah Xavier Johnson.
The U.S. Army has confirmed Johnson served in the Army Reserves and received several awards after a tour of Afghanistan.
Five police officers were killed Thursday evening when Johnson opened fire on a peaceful protest against recent police shootings. Seven other officers and two civilians were wounded.
Johnson was eventually killed after a lengthy standoff with police.
