8.6 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Indonesian Coastline

A massive earthquake struck off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

It happened Wednesday afternoon their time, triggering a tsunami alert for the Indian Ocean.That tsunami warning has since been lifted.

The quake struck about 434 kilometers southwest of the capital of Indonesia’s Aceh province, and had a magnitude of 8.6. It took place at a depth of 23 kilometers.

The quake did knock out power in Indonesia’s Aceh province, the closest land to the quakes’ epicenter.

The quake hit in the same region as the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. That earthquake killed over 200,000 people.
