Tuesday, a young cancer survivor is back in the news: The city of San Francisco was turned into Gotham City for Batkid just one month ago. Now his international stardom is sparking a program to help save lives of other young children.
In November, Batkid took on Gotham City, today he takes on the City of Medford. Our camera’s met once more with the child behind the mask, 5 year old cancer survivor Miles Scott from Tulelake, California. He and his family are visiting Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center for a very special reason. “We can give back so we started this program, the Batkid Foundation,” says Batdad Nick Scott. He says the money raised will go to the the Ronald McDonald House in Portland, the Rogue Valley Hospital, and Make-A-Wish – all three groups supported the Scotts while Miles was in treatment for leukemia.
“When he was 18 months he was diagnosed,” Nick Scott shares the difficult road they traveled for three years. “As a parent it’s frustrating. You always want to be able to help your kids, but with something like this there’s nothing you can do.” Scott says they were lucky. Miles got his wish and is most importantly– now in remission. “We’re just a drop in the bucket. It’s great that we got the conclusion we wanted,” he says, “…we wish we could give everyone that.”
Saving Gotham was just pretend… “He just doesn’t understand it, he doesn’t get how big it is, how he’s been able to change things,” says Nick. Now, through the Batkid Foundation, the hooded hero’s inspiration goes on to do some real world saving.
