Bill To Consider Veteran’s History During Criminal Sentencing Goes To The Oregon House

Criminal courts could be required to consider a veteran’s military history during sentencing under a bill passed by the Oregon senate.

Senate Bill 124 was passed unanimously on Monday.

It would give judges the authority to impose more lenient sentences on veterans, especially those suffering from combat-related mental illness likePTSD.

Violent crimes would be excluded from special consideration. Also, veterans who have been dishonorably discharged would not be able to benefit from the measure.

The measure now moves on to the Oregon House
