25,000 eligible students could be turned away from California State University campuses because of massive budget cuts.
The Cal State University Board of Trustees discussed a proposed enrollment freeze Tuesday night… and while a tax ballot measure in June might provide relief, students are scared.
“This throws a huge monkey wrench in my plans.”
37-year old Mabel Stewart was hoping to transfer to Cal State University Chico in the spring of 2013.
“I’m going to have to revamp.”
But budget cuts could mean that the Cal State University system of 23 schools could trim enrollment by up to 25,000 students.
Those most effected… transfer students like Mabel.
“Closing the doors on that, that’s not good politics… or good economics.”
At College of the Siskiyous half of the students will transfer into the CSU system, so counselors are advising students to be prepared and make contingency plans.
“What I’ve always said to students is to have a plan B, but now for some students it may be having a plan C as well.”
Counselor Bruce Johnston says if a ballot measure in June passes some cuts could be avoided… but for now he’s advising students to hit the books.
“Be best qualified so you will be among those accepted.”
That’s what Mabel Stewart is doing… as she considers taking a semester off… postponing her education..something she’s hoping she won’t be forced to do.
Perhaps most upsetting to students, while the board considers the budget cuts they’re also increasing salaries for the new university presidents at Cal State Fullerton and Cal State East Bay.
