Fire Officials: 5-yr-old Boy Starts Fire in Workshop

Rural Metro officials in Josephine County said a five-year-old boy started a fire in a workshop outside his home just before six Sunday evening.

Eight units and roughly 20-people worked to put out flames inside a workshop at 3955 Highland Avenue in Josephine County.

Officials said two children were inside the shop when one of them, a five-year-old boy, began playing with a lighter and started the fire.

According to fire officials, the family’s manufactured home next to the workshop was threatened, but crews were able to keep it from catching fire. There were no injuries, but the shop is a complete loss.

The child’s parents will be referred to the State Fire Marshal’s Office for a juvenile fire setter intervention program.
