Tsunami warning issued for Alaska after quake

Anchorage, Ak.(KING) — A tsunami warning has been issued for parts of Alaska’s Aleutian Island chain after a powerful earthquake.

The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude-8.0 quake was recorded at 12:53 p.m. local time Monday afternoon. It was centered about 13 miles southeast of Little Sitkin Island.

The depth was 71.1 miles.

The National Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska, issued a tsunami warning for the coastal areas of Alaska. It stretches from Nikolski to Attu.

The center also issued a tsunami advisory for coastal areas from Nikolski to Unimak Pass.

The Pacific Tsunami warning center no tsunami threat exists for other coastal areas in the Pacific although some other areas may experience small non-destructive sea level changes lasting up to several hours.
