Use of Ignition Interlock Devices on the Rise

Use of ignition interlock devices has soared across the country as more and more states require drunk driving offenders to install them.

In Oregon, legislature was unanimously passed for 2011 and 2012 mandating more drivers to install the devices which the driver pays for.

A driver is required to blow into the device. If their breath shows under a certain level of alcohol the interlock will allow the car to start.

Supporters of the devices say that re-arrest rates plummet when the devices are installed. Critics say that some offenders find ways around having to install the device. Also once the interlock is removed, statistics show the rate of recidivism climbs right back up.
