Man who survived plane crash in Nazi territory dies in Medford

Medford, Ore. — A Medford man who survived a plane crash in Nazi-occupied Albania in 1943 died on January 22 at age 94.

The New York Times reports Harold Hayes was part of a group of medics when the plane crashed.

He, along with 30 other noncombatants survived German attacks, blizzards, and walked 600 miles until being rescued near the Adriatic Sea for nine weeks.

Hayes’ daughter said he died after an operation.
