South Medford forfeits win

Medford, Ore. — A local high school football team is facing consequences after an administrative oversight, and is forfeiting a win.

A school district spokeswoman called it ‘a series of unfortunate events’ that led up to the incident that involved a new student to the football program.

South Medford High School said they didn’t receive the student’s transcripts until after the student played in their first two games this year.

School counselors later noticed the student did not meet the minimum amount of credits required by the Oregon School Activities Association, also known as OSAA.

That’s when it was brought to the athletic department, and South Medford was forced to forfeit the two games that the student played.

Students said it’s a disappointing consequence, not only to the team, but to them as well.

“Everyone loves going to the football games. I feel like the football players are like the top of the school. They’re like always the ones that are fun because we get to go watch them,” said Ashley Nelson, South Medford High School student.

South Medford said because this was an oversight by the school, the student was not punished. However, the student will remain ineligible until further notice, with no word on when he’ll be cleared by the OSAA.

The team’s next game is tomorrow night against Willamette High School for a league contest.
